Random Reads Online Featured Titles for May

This month, we're talking about three different books--the top three in the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. Have you read any? Give us your comments here. Not read them? Use the links at left to visit our library catalog and see if they're in. You might just see your comment posted here!

We also will do a drawing on June 4th from our blog-worthy entries. Just for participating, you could win a $10 gift certificate for Showplace 16 movie theater in Schererville, IN! So what are we reading this time?

A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer
David Pelzer, victim of one of the worst child abuse cases in the history of California, tells the story of how he survived his mother's brutality and triumphed over his past. Dave was starved, poisoned, and even stabbed before he was put into foster care. This book took first place in the 2005 Abe Awards.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
The heroine of this novel, fourteen-year-old Suzy Salmon, narrates from heaven because she's been murdered in the first chapter. She watches her family and friends struggle with their lives after her death, and misses them all terribly. This book took second place in the 2005 Abe Awards.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Melinda broke up the biggest party of the year before her freshman year began by calling the police. Now she’s a pariah in a new school. But if people knew why she called the police in the first place, they would treat her differently. This book took third place in the 2005 Abe Awards.
