Brandi's Basement - Prom

Here's a fantastic book from the Read for a Lifetime list. Prom by Laurie Halse Anderson is a story for the every-girl. Ashley is classified a "troubled student" by basically the entire faculty of her high school. She ditches class, rarely does her homework, has more detentions than time, works at a pizza place in a rat costume, and her boyfriend has a one way ticket to nowhere. Her best friend Natalia lives next door with her parents and her crazy, ravioli-eating, Russian-speaking grandmother.

One day everything changes.

Word leaks out that the math teacher stole all of the prom committee's funds. Now there's a chance the prom will be canceled. After some prompting by Nat, Ashley steps up to help save the prom.

Prom has its laugh out loud moments but also has the capacity to make you think. Find out if Ashley succeeds in her mission to save the prom.

Brandi's Basement

Every once in a while a book comes a long that you just love. All you want to do is climb up to the tallest building and scream how great this book really is. Every time you finish a heart-stopping passage, you grab the person next to you and read it over to them out loud so that others can enjoy too.

Dread Locks by Neal Shusterman is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Shusterman takes to popular kid's story Goldilocks and the Three Bears and mixes it with the myth of Medusa, a woman with snakes for hair. In this story, Parker Baer's life is turned upside down when a mysterious girl named Tara moves in next door. Tara has long golden spirals of hair that almost look alive and she always wears sunglasses, even inside. Shortly after she arrives, weird things start to happen. For example, students become very tired all the time and begin to do some bizarre things like eating dirt. Coincidence?
