UGLIES - Winner of the Lincoln Award

UGLIES by SCOTT WESTERFELD not only won the prestigious Lincoln Award for 2007, but it is a GREAT book.

The world as we know it has collapsed because of a virus that infects the gasoline in our cars, exploding and generally causing havoc.

The new world we see is through the eyes of an Ugly named Tally. She can't wait to turn 15 so she can have the Pretty surgery and hang out with her best friend Paris again. While she's waiting, she falls in with another Ugly named Shay who livens up her nights with hoverboard trips out to the ruins and forbidden trips into New Pretty Town.

But when Shay decides that she doesn't want to be surgically altered and she likes her body just the way it is, she runs away to Smoke, a hidden town of Uglies who hide from the city, dodging Pretty surgery. This leaves Tally in a terrible position, because the one thing she wants - to be pretty - is taken away from her; unless she finds Smoke and betrays her friend. It is a tough decision, but it seems like a no-brainer, until Tally finds out the real truth about becoming Pretty. But is it too late to turn back from her path of betrayal?

This book is not only well written, it is exciting and fast paced and really makes you wonder: what is ugly?
